Southern Taekwondo Championships - 01/06/08 Report
Report By: Stephanie Gooch (4th Kup, Blue belt, Age15)
The Southern Taekwondo Championships, at Littledown Centre, Bournemouth, was held over 2 days. Day one was for patterns and Day two was for sparring. I took part in both events and collected 2 silver medals which I was pleased with. The first day started out around 1.30pm, and as time progressed all the different age groups competed. I was against two red tags that were older than me. I won my first round and was into the final, unfortunately halfway through the pattern I choked and missed a move! A reminder to us all - always concentrate on what you are doing! This meant that I came in second which was ok. I just want to say thanks to Mr. Murray who came on the Saturday to coach me. I couldn’t have done it without him.
The next day started a lot earlier as we had to weigh in at 8-8:30am. It was much busier with clubs from all over the south of England competing and there was a real sense of competition in the air. After the weigh-in we relaxed until our fights began.
Tom came out with gold. Charlie, within only 20 seconds, did a fantastic back kick and knocked his competitor out and won immediately, he got gold. As for me, I was against an experienced black belt, unfortunately, but I tried hard to kick and even though I did receive 2 blows to the head I did get up and got silver. As a club we got 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.
Overall it was a tiring but brilliant day and I really felt that we got to know each other a little bit more. Dean said we were like a family (unfortunately one that kicks each other!) rather than just a club and it really felt like it. Big thanks to Cathy and Dean for coaching us, Mr Murray (and family) for moral support and Katherina for taking pictures.

Competition - 20/04/08 Report
Congratulations to all those who took part in the competition held in White City, London on Sunday 20th April. From the well timed and powerful kicks of Wayne and Tom to the pure determination and enthusiasm of Frank and Alfie, Chung Yong's fighters once again made us proud!
Although the competition itself was a little disjointed at times, Chung Yong's fighters and Instructors all did there best to assist by corner judging, top tabling and refereeing as well as competing in some of the most hard fought and entertaining fights of the day.
A special mention must go to Matthew Fontyn as the instructors felt he had shown outstanding improvement in his fighting since his last competition.
Well done again to all those who took part and assisted on the day; Alfie Chambers, Frank Molloy, Daniel Gilhooly, Karina Egorov, Seran Sarvananthan, Thomas Fontyn, Helen Gilhooly, Matthew Fontyn, Wayne Clark, Dean Gibbs, Winnie Murray, Katherina Gross and Cathy Gibbs.
See you all at the next squad training.

Chungdokwan Nationals - 08/03/08 Report
Report By: Charlie Gosnell (6th Kup, Blue tag, Age 13)
At 7:05 the minibus (driven by Mrs. Gibbs) pulled up at the cannons leisure centre, Mitcham, to collect the Chung Yong competitors. We were all a bit tired but none the less in good spirits for Chung Yong’s first fight of the year.
We arrived at Bracknell around 8:00am and as usual took up as many seats as we could, before we went to weigh in at around 8:45am.
For Chung Yong the day started very successfully in the patterns competition when
Kayley’s outstanding performance left us with the first gold of the day as she successfully completed Taegeuk Sam Jang and Taegeuk Sah Jang beating her 2 fellow competitors.
Around an hour later we moved on to the women’s black belt patterns, where Katherina despite being pregnant completed Taegeuk Pal Jang and Taebaek extremely well beating her fellow 3 competitors winning another gold for Chung Yong.
Through-out the day, (before the fights) we caught a glimpse of the new adidas electronic body armour, that was used in a test fight; the body armour is designed to automatically count the points scored to the body, meaning corner judges will only be there to count head-shots. They may be brought into WTF taekwondo in the future.
We also got a chance to see Mr. Murray, and his partner Sylvia along with their new baby Maya, who is just 3 months old.
And of course we did some valuable warming up in preparation for our fights.
Finally at 2:30pm the fighting started, (Chung Yong has been here since 8:00am)
Our first fight of the day was Clirim who done extremely well in his fight winning 3-4 gaining his last point within the last 20 seconds. Meaning he was put through to the final. In his final again he did extremely well but lost 2-4 winning silver for the club.
Connor won with ease with a direct 0-7, seven point rule, winning gold.
Thomas had an amazing first fight against a black belt where the black belt threw the towel in; Thomas won with three points to one. Thomas then went through to his final where he was beat 0-5 but won silver for the club.
Wayne beat his opponent 9-2 again the seven point rule, 2 amazing axe kicks from Wayne, the second one could have been harder though. Wayne won gold.
Jay gave a great fight with strong and powerful kicks and won 0-7 again seven point rule. Winning gold for the club.
Elliot gave a good effort but was beat 0-7 but still won silver for Chung Yong.
Charlie gave an interesting fight with 2 good headshots beating his opponent 8-1 yet again the seven point rule; Charlie won gold for the club.
Andy was beaten 0-7 but still won silver for the club. He gave some good strong kicks, just a shame they didn’t score.
After we’d all beaten some people up Matthew’s first opponent must have got scared as he didn’t turn up meaning Matthew got put into a final, where he tried hard but was beat 8-1 winning silver.
Roger was our last fight of the day. For his first fight he did very well, with good kicks and effort. He won silver for Chung Yong.
It was the end of a very long day but for our first fight of the year Chung Yong did extremely well winning 6 gold’s and 6 silver’s.
A big congratulations to all competitors’ Poomse and Kyorugi,
Keep up the good work.
Charlie.

DORSET CHAMPIONSHIPS – 21/10/07 Report
Report By: Helen Gilhooly (7th Kup, Green belt, Adult)
The day began with a very early rise for all Chung Yong fighters – we had to meet at our Instructor’s house at 6am and drive to Bournemouth for weigh in at 8.30am!! It was a 2 ½ hour drive and everyone was in great spirit. There were 13 fighters fighting.
When weigh in was over, we done warm up exercises which everyone was very keen and enthusiastic about. The first half of the day was taken up with pewee fights and the latter half with Cadets, Juniors and Seniors.
Chung Yong done very well with regard to medals – 3 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze. A summary of how each fighter done is given below:-
Name No of fights Scores Award
Daniel 2 2-0 3-0 Silver
Thomas 2 4-0 5-1 Gold
Elliot 1 2-1 Bronze
Conor 1 6-5 Gold
Charlie 1 2-1 Silver
Joshua 1 7-0 Bronze
Mark 3 4-0 5-5 6-1 Silver
Wayne 2 6-2 11-4 Silver
Kenya 1 0-1 Gold
Calum 1 4-0 Bronze
Matthew 1 6-1 Silver
Jay 2 3-0 2-3 Silver
Helen 1 4-1 Silver
Some of the fighters were impressive but the most impressive fighter of the Chung Yong Club on the day was Jay as it was his first time to fight in a tournament. He showed great flexibility and done some great head shots. He showed great potential of being a good fighter.
Chung Yong came away with a trophy as well for coming 2nd place out of all the Clubs that participated in the tournament.
On a personal note, I am proud to be a member of the Chung Yong Club as it is very close knit and the instructors are very dedicated in ensuring that all members give their best during training and competition. They are always there to give advice.
